Hello all!
Every year for my birthday I fundraise for an organization that is near and dear to my heart. Last year, I lost my best friend in the whole world (basically sister) tragically to suicide. Erika left behind so many that loved her including my two godchildren and her husband. Her kids were 4 and 2 when she passed. She was such a light in this world. She was silly, sweet, loving, caring, adventurous, and hilarious. She loved you fiercely and was the most genuine person ever. She was the best mom she could be and her kids adored her. It was the most devasting day of our lives when she left us. She was only 24 years old.
Suicide takes the lives of 800,000 world-wide each year. In 2020, suicide was the second leading cause of death for youth ages 10 to 14, and adults ages 25 to 34 in the United States.
I truly believe that with education, we all can do our part in better equipping ourselves to help our loved ones that struggle with mental illness. Here is a little exert about the organization I chose this year: The Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas.
"The Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas is one of fewer than 80 centers nationwide to have achieved certification by the American Association of Suicidology, the national accrediting body for suicide prevention and crisis intervention centers.
Each month, 1,500 people in crisis call us at 214.828.1000 to speak to a trained, caring counselor. Anytime, day or night, someone always answers. Our professional staff regularly provides consultation and in-service seminars for schools, hospitals, and other professionals dealing with high-intensity crisis."
In addition, the SCCNT also has support groups and crisis debriefing services.
I will be collecting donations during our Pie Eating Contest event at our booth. You can also donate directly through the organization's website. I will be sending collected donations in Erika's name.
If you're struggling with suicidal thoughts, please know you are not alone, you are loved, and your life is worth living. 214.828.1000 is the number to the suicide hotline of North Texas.
Erika--Thank you for loving me for over half my life. I am forever grateful for the years of sisterhood, laughter, and joy. I will miss you for the rest of my life.
Thanks for reading,
-Chef Karina
